Tempted Redux

Sometimes we view temptation as a conflict between the red and white figures on either shoulder. Too often we fall for the little guy with the pitchfork in our cartoon. Jesus faced temptation in a much more brutal, three-dimensional manner against the stark palette of the Judean wilderness. This episode has often been understood as a template for how we too could fight temptation. Nevertheless, we see in this exchange in the wilderness, the story of triumph reenacted against Israel's story--and ultimately our own stories--of failure.

We can see that a contextual understanding of this provocative text touches upon Monday-Friday cubicle life and the inhumanity of modern slavery.

Newly Human

As with any story of personal transformation; it's what happens on the inside that matters most. Change is not just about losing weight, getting into that prestigious program, and getting promoted --it's about the feeling of accomplishment and worth. In this text in Ephesians, Paul addresses the greatest kind of personal transformation that touches even into areas of who we are that are unconscious. Power transformation comes not from the outside in, but the inside out towards a new way of being human.

Common Unity

We have been habituated to think and live that faith in Christ is a personal spiritual journey to be lived out in relationship between you and God. Paul upends our cultural, individualistic conventions and frames the Gospel life as one walking together with other in common unity.
In Pauls prayer for the Ephesians, we see his heart for people to experience Gods power in their souls. We might typically understand the Christian life as a decision for conversion, an emotional experience, or an intellectual pursuit (whether youre a skeptic or a believer). However, we are reminded in this text that at the heart of the unimaginable things that God can do in our lives is his power.

From Strangers to Family

Outside of Jesus Messiah, our spiritual community is either non-existent or hopelessly distant. The latter half of Ephesians 2 focuses on the corporate dimensions of Christ's work of peace on the cross and how that through his body, he killed hostility so that we in turn might be one new body. Simply stated, Jesus makes peace between the hopelessly distant.

Saved From Death By Grace for Life

Our understanding of the nature of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is typically couched in moral or religious categories—good/bad, sacred/secular, righteous/corrupted and others. However, in this brief summary of the Gospel in Ephesians 2, Paul uses the most stark and relevant category possible: death and life. He includes a supernatural quality to what living apart from the Creator’s grace is like as well as what the life of grace is like. The former is death; the latter is life towards an epic story.

Gospel Primacy of the City

The city, as Edward Glaeser, describes recently in his The Triumph of the City, is an "engine of innovation." In the book of Acts, God uses the city -- filled with people -- as a tool to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. Acts 19:8-10 shows how "The Way" spreads not just from city to city, but also from the city to the surrounding regions, even in opposition.

The Ascension of Jesus: Going where no man has gone before

The work of Jesus Christ is mainly two-fold: his humiliation and his exaltation. The ascension of Jesus Christ is an oft forgotten doctrine with rich meaning and relevance for the church today. It forms part of Christ's exaltation. Upon his ascension, did Jesus return to heaven only as God leaving his manhood behind? What is Jesus doing now in heaven and what does it matter for us here on earth now? This message tries to "blow off the dust" to a vital doctrine today elucidating the historical fact and current reality that Jesus is the exalted Son.

Altars in the city

Paul's talk in Athens is perhaps one of the most studied speeches that takes place in arguably the most influential city in human world history. It is typical, as a result, to look at Paul's method on how he addresses a skeptical, urbane audience. However, the medium is not the full message here: he addresses the seat of what is unknown driving our lives and yet intuitive with how the Gospel allows us to know the Creator.

Children and the City: raising city-kids who prevail and thrive through the gospel

The manual for child-rearing biblically is contained in an urban-named book containing a vision of a resurrected Lord who has poured out all blessings upon his people. Paul teaches that the gospel is the key to families thriving in the city. We are called to raise our urban children in view of the resurrected Lord.

Sex and the City

If there are two images that have been joined in the modern human imagination, it is, perhaps, these two: Sex and the City. But, having heard from the silver screen, we should ask: what does the inspired word of God have to say about romantic love? In Song of Songs 5:2-8 we encounter an urban love poem about the intoxicating power of erotic love. Once awakened, erotic and romantic desire needs the protection of the covenant community. In a world of romantic disappointment, frustration and even violence, our challenge is to continue to build the covenant community and the sisterhood of the daughters of Jerusalem. **Please note: Due to technical difficulties, the last 5 minutes of this sermon are not recorded.

In Jonah 4 we meet a very angry prophet, disturbed that God doesn't destroy Nineveh but does destroy a plant giving him shade. What we get angry about tells us a great deal about what we value, idolize and think about God. We get concerned about our comfort, while God is concerned about the masses of lost people.
Prayer for the City

Many of us have a certain stand in relation to the city. Some might bow against it because of its crime and moral corruption. Some might bow towards it in embracing all that the city stands for and has to offer. In this account of Abraham’s prayer of intercession to God about the city of Sodom, we discover a different kind of stance: Standing before God for the city.

Genesis 1 is in reality a beautiful, ancient, and elegant Hebrew poem that describe First Cause of Creativity. God takes a look at all that he makes and declares that it’s good. Perhaps, no different than when you paint a beautiful portrait, play in a symphony, lay bricks in symmetry, make a compelling Board room presentation—that rush, that feeling of having made something out of nothing, had a beginning somewhere.
Nicodemus - Coming at Night

In John 3 we learn the fascinating story of a learned intellectual who comes to Jesus under the cloak of night. But Jesus' response to Nicodemus shows us that: great intellect and great learning do not qualify us for the Kingdom of God. Rather, as Jesus teaches: We must be born again.

All Church Worship Celebration: DNA of Gospel Community

Acts 2.42-47 is one of the most famous and beautiful descriptions of the church in all literature. From their humble beginnings in the gospel, to the spread across Asia Minor, the early church lived according to four powerful rhythms that might be called "The DNA of Gospel Community."

Working Masterpieces

Most of us know how working in monotony can erase our sense of destiny. Are we really created for important work? Paul deepens our understanding of salvation to widen the canvas of our lives as masterpieces. Through the Gospel, God destines us as His masterpieces to perform a life-long work of good deeds.

Ecclesiastes 9:7-10

Often we are persuaded by the world and Solomon (traditionally held to be the author of this text) certainly bought this myth that greatness equals some kind of excess: wealth, great pleasure, works, or lovers. Can an ordinary life be great? Ecclesiastes 9:7-10 teaches that in our urban-jungle, full of thistles and thorns, we can still celebrate the simple joys of meal, marriage and work knowing even a simple life, lived well by faith can honor God.

Genesis 3:17-19

Genesis 3 teaches that people are alienated from their work because of something much deeper than class struggle, the industrial or information revolution, globalization or the WTO. According to the Bible we discover that there is a fundamental disjointedness; that the world is not the way it was created to be. Though we were created to work – work has become defiled by what theologians call The Fall.

Enslaved

Pharaoh’s hard heart of defiance, exploitation, and his own enslavement to control is branded by his self-justifying question, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice . . .?” His escalation of enslavement of an oppressed people is a telling image of the manner in which we ourselves are enslaved to impossible expectations that drive us to endlessly gather up “straw” off of the ground in our lives. That’s a hard way to live.

7 Life-End Lessons from a Jail Cell

Paul, the most successful church planter ever, abandoned to a jail cell in Rome, writes to prepare Timothy for the difficult days ahead by: reminding Timothy of his spiritual heritage (1:3-5), his gifting (6-7), calling him to willingly suffer (1:8-18) to multiply his ministry in others (2:1-15), pursue holiness (2:16-26) all the while expecting great opposition (3:1-13) and ultimately to finish well like Paul (3:14-4:22) by standing on God’s inspired Word and fulfilling his ministry.
