When the Lord's Answers Don't Make Sense...

When our convictions about God are challenged by life's circumstances, we must prayerfully and patiently hold on to these convictions while waiting to see how the Lord will work things out.

When Prayer Meets Perplexity...

When faced with the ugliness of what was happening in his world, Habakkuk asked "Where is God?" questions in the context of heartfelt prayer. His honest lament is instructive for those facing the stark realities of our dayy

The Call of the Gospel

How the Lord Helps His People...

In the wake of the leadership crisis in ancient Israel, the Lord used the godly, courageous, faithful Samuel to call the nation to repentance and rededication, to lead them to victory, restoration and peace and to eventually anoint two kings. One of them, David, would be the ancestor of the leader/king par excellence, the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Heavy Hand of God

In 1 Samuel 5 the supremacy of God was demonstrated in the humiliation of Dagon, the god of the Philistines, in his own temple and the affliction of the Philistine people in their own land. Here we see clearly that the weakness and failure of God's people are not to be equated with the impotence of God. This ancient scene also foreshadows the victory of Jesus over the unseen powers of darkness through His death and resurrection.

The spiritual and moral failure of Eli and his sons led to their dismissal from the priesthood by the Lord and to the appointment of a faithful priest who would share God's heart and do God's will.
What Do You Do with the Gospel?

Romans 15:14 begins the final section of Romans that includes an appeal for the believers in Rome to join Paul in taking the gospel where it had not been preached. This helps us to see that those who have believed the gospel and challenged to apply the gospel should seek to share the gospel and partner with those who do the same.

The Triumph of God's Mercy!

Though Israel as a whole has stubbornly rejected God's righteousness through Christ, God has not rejected Israel as demonstrated by the remnant who have come to faith. His inclusive mercy has also meant that "wild olive tree" Gentiles have been received into the family of God. Thus all who have received mercy should humbly receive each other and honor one another.

God's Gospel Initiative!

Gospel preaching is the heartbeat of God's plan to bring lost people unto Himself. Israel of old, though favored first with the gospel, as a whole, failed to embrace it. The church, led by preachers, is to be a community of those who proclaim the gospel even when challenged by the rebellious unbelief of some who hear.

Our apologies: the first 10 minutes of this sermon is not included in this file because it had been corrupted. We will try to rectify the problem soon.

The cosmic transfer of ownership that comes with the gospel is illustrated by slavery - image is often the better teacher of truth. Slavery has powerful implications for our status and conduct in Christ as well as being a powerful motivator for finishing well.

Abraham Prefigures Paul's Gospel of Faith

Early in the letter (1:2) Paul asserted that his gospel had been pre-proclaimed in the Old Testament. Later he pronounced the same (3:21). To this point, however, he has never shown any evidence for his claim. But now, having just claimed that his gospel of faith is manifested 'apart from the law', he must. So, in chapter 4 he preaches to prove his point from the life of Abraham (as well as David). And as a result, we learn that getting right with God has always been by faith, and not only that, but that from the beginning this good news was intended for all people.

No Exceptions!

Paul's teaching in Romans 3 helps us to see that without exception all of mankind is under God's wrath. Even those who were recipients and trustees of God's word were pronounced "guilty" by a faithful and righteous God. The charges against the human race are validated by God's word; the law provides no cure for mankind's malady.

Romans: The Thesis Statement

Paul completes the introduction to his letter by giving the church two of the most potent verses in all the Bible - verses that will take him the next fifteen chapters to unpack!
An Introduction to Romans

For over 2000 years, Paul's letter to the Romans has exercised an influence upon the Christian Church that is unmatched by any other book in all the corpus of Biblical literature. Not only that, but the influence of Romans upon our understanding of the Christian faith is also without parallel. For this letter contains the the fullest measure of the Bible's hidden treasures. In these opening verses, Paul introduces his readers to three treasures that the rest of letter will unfold: God' Ways, God's Gospel and the Gospel's Goal.

The Triumph of God's Grace!

In 2 Samuel 11 we see that "the wife of Uriah" found her way into the earthly family of Jesus through her relationship with David the king who was in charge of the nation but lacked the self-control necessary for the well-being of his own soul, his family and those under his rule. The Lord sent Nathan the prophet to David and that led to his repentance and forgiveness. Christmas celebrates another sending that can result in repentance and forgiveness, the sending of God's Son to be our Savior.

The one who rejected Ruth is supplanted by the one who redeemed her - and from that act flow forth words of rejoicing. The final genealogy stands as a record for any who doubt or disbelieve the legitmacy of David's reign.
For many, the story of Judah and Tamar comes as a surprise because it interrupts the Joseph narrative. In actual fact, the Joseph story is the interlude - Joseph exists becasue Judah must. And the scandal of Tamar's union with Judah, through whom the Christ will come, pales in significance to the ultimate Christmas scandal - that you and I can be united to Christ.

Mark 9:2-13

Mark opened his gospel with the heavens being torn open and the voice of God descending to earth to proclaim that Jesus was God's beloved Son. Now, at the apex of his narrative, Jesus ascends the high mountain with his chosen followers and is transfigured before them. Again, a voice announces that we are to listen to him. And while faith to follow him in obedience is commended, fear is not.

All Church Worship Celebration: DNA of Gospel Community

Acts 2.42-47 is one of the most famous and beautiful descriptions of the church in all literature. From their humble beginnings in the gospel, to the spread across Asia Minor, the early church lived according to four powerful rhythms that might be called "The DNA of Gospel Community."

Mark 8:22-30

For many, Peter's confession that Jesus is the 'Christ' indicates progress in his understanding Jesus' true identity. However, for Mark, the opposite is intended, as the context reveals. In point of fact, spending time with Jesus was of no advantage in coming to recognize him, and that is good news for you and me.

Mark 3

By chapter 3 of Mark's gospel, the early returns on Jesus are in - he is playing to mixed reviews. Some stand against him, others continue to press around him, while the demons fall, lacking heart felt adoration, before him. Yet, Mark goes on to reveal to us that Jesus is committed to gathering his own to him, while warning others of the 'unpardonable sin' that would be held against them.

In this collection, the sixth of seven in the book, we come upon two portraits - one of the wise man, marked as a person of prayer, humility and reverence for God's Word. The other is of a generation of men, who are marked by foolish slander, arrogance, and whose end is destruction. In the first we see Jesus, in the second, the enemies of God.

Will you choose wisdom or folly?

In the first eight chapters of Proverbs the narrator builds a case for wisdom and against folly. In chapter nine we are presented with the personification of lady Wisdom and lady Folly and are compelled to choose the path that we will follow. One leads to life, and one leads to death. The fear of the Lord lies at the heart of this decision.

The Assurance of God's Promise

In Rahab, the Canaanite prostitute, "strength and courage" found human expression. The Lord used the faith of an outsider to strengthen the faith of His own people. Her words echoed the words of the Lord that He would deliver on His promise to give His people the land. God can be trusted to do what He has promised!
