The story of the Prodigal Son is one of the best known in the Scriptures, becoming a metaphor for those who wantonly lead a reckless lifestyle and is saved to their secure familial roots and, in turn, acceptance. We have seen this plot played out before and, perhaps for you, it’s about someone else’s recklessness and someone else’s form of acceptance. We’re OK, and not prodigal and do not need rescue in our lives.
You might be surprised to know that the parable of the Prodigal Son, however, is about you. It’s about you who have been irreligious and decadent who find that self-seeking pleasure does not connect you to God. But, it’s also about you who are religious and moralistic and rely upon having it together to have rightness in life. You see, there is another brother in the story, an elder brother who Jesus teaches us is just as lost as his younger brother. And between them both, we find ourselves and that we are all in need of the transforming power of the radical grace of God in our lives.
Come join us as we explore this parable through Tim Keller’s (Redeemer Presbyterian Church, Manhattan) book The Prodigal God in a special study about the gospel of grace that is relevant, personal, and inclusive of us all.
